Sustainability is the capacity to endure. . . . . it is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which in turn depends on the well being of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources. (Source)
I'm going to go try and go an entire week without driving my car. I'm doing this because one, I want to see if I can, and two, we have free (yes FREE) public transportation. Owning a car is almost vital in Montana because of the far proximity of everything, but I've been driving my car too much lately. I live across town from where I work and some days I drive to work, back to my house for lunch, back to work and then I drive home. It's insane and a huge waste of money and resources.
So, I'm going to catch the bus to work in the morning and then walk home. I've done this before and I love it. It's so beautiful here in the (very short) summer and I feel like I must take full advantage. Also, with the horrendous oil spill in the Gulf, I kinda feel like it's the least I can do to promote sustainability and it's importance in our coexistence with nature and this magnificent planet--but that's just the tree hugger in me . . .and I'm saving serious cash. :-)
Day One: My day off . . . ahhhh. I have a Dr. appointment so I have to plan my walk accordingly. I'm running a little late . . . and honestly contemplate just taking my car. "It's only a two miles". I try and rationalize . . . but I am just being silly. It's 70 degrees and sunny out. I walk the roughly two miles to and from the appointment. On the way I pass our local skateboard park and I smile at the kids, remembering how awesome summer break was when I was a kid. I also saw these in someone's yard and snapped a pic with my phone:
Happy Summer Solstice today!

This is such a great idea! I am moving from a city with a very efficient public transportation system back to a suburb where I will have 2 cars. I haven't had a car in over 3 years, and I am distraught over having this responsibility again. But I plan to not use the cars that much.
Probably going out next tuesday night, if you want to meet up?!
PS. Love the new look btw :)
I love to drive, but it's just gotten so expensive and it really is terrible for the environment. It's not so bad walking, but I still miss driving.
Oooh!! And you will be here in Montana soon!! Next Tuesday sounds great!! It will be so cool to meet you!
Thank you!! I like how blogger lets us choose new designs and that we can customize them a little. I don't have the patience to make one from "scratch".
Well, see ya soon and travel safe!
