Buddha Belly

"The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly." -- Buddha

I don't know if it is just my age, but I am finding that I stress a lot less than I used to. I'm not sure what happened. I think I just trick myself into not stressing. Even in the middle of a giant shit-storm in my life, things just seem to work out in the end if I stress about them or not. I mean, my bank account isn't going to magically re-fill itself, that guy who dumped me isn't going to realize he's suddenly madly in love with me, these extra pounds don't really define me, and my flat tire isn't going to change itself.

I just have to deal.

Another thing I've noticed is how easy it is for someone's negativity to effect my life--if I let it. For example, I am currently working at a property management office and I get at least one phone call a day where someone is literally screaming at me about how we overcharged them when they moved out.

Anyway, what I've found is, that rather than get on the defensive, I just let them vent for about 30 seconds, then I interrupt with an apology. Now, I'm not apologizing for making a mistake. I apologize that they are upset. 'Cause sometimes I think people just want to be heard.

This is also when mindful meditation helps. Call me silly and even (gasp!) idealistic, but I really believe that this works. When you are living your life in the present moment it is difficult to feel anxiety about what is going to happen or how what has happened in the past is effecting you. When you create positive thoughts and visualize positive outcomes in your life, you make it easier for positive things (and people) to come into your life.

Try it. Seriously.

Smile at someone tomorrow. Don't be creepy or anything and don't smile at people who are giving you a creepy vibe . . . I'm talking about a cashier or hey, if you're renting a place, how about showing the people in the property management office some love.

:-),
Nik

I know it's 11:19 my time, but reading your blog made my day. I definitely needed the perspective check. I'm a little excited to think about who I'm going to smile at tomorrow....;)
