It's been a week since I moved away from Montana, into my new place, and started my new job. Here are some things I've learned about my new little (and I stress little) town:
- People here smile a lot, even when you don't know them.
- I forgot what humidity feels like. Yuck.
- I am only twenty miles away from the Wyoming border, but people still have accents and it cracks me up. "You just go owt-side and then done-stairs in the state of Sow-th Dah-kotah . . ."
- I only "know", like, 5 people and "know of" absolutely no one. This is strange to me. I know it will get better and I should enjoy this time, but I am impatient. Which leads me to #5 . . .
- I miss my Montana friends, co-workers, and acquaintances a lot.
- I work on a dry campus. This kinda blows my mind out of it's socket.
- I was recently at a picnic and we used corn-based, biodegradable utensils and Styrofoam plates. Hmmm? This would blow the minds of the yuppies up in Bozeman right out of their sockets.
- I have given up the smell of crisp, new books for the smell of old (we're talking mid to late 1800's, old) books and I LOVE it!
- I eat at the salad bar in the Student Union Building, have a card that looks like my old student ID card (only this one says staff), and I have a roommate. I feel like I am in college again--only I can't wear my PJ pants to work.
- Things are not better or worse here, just different--which is just the way I like it. Plus, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are coming to Deadwood this month. Oh, hell yes.
