Just The Highlights Please . . .

Over the last couple of days I have come across some things that I thought were cool that I want to share with you.

First, some highlights from work (the library) . . .

A kid (about 4 or 5) comes in the main door with his mother, who is pushing a baby in a stroller, and asks me:  "Guess what my little sister's favorite food is? . . . . and then exclaims "Paper!"

Nice.

Another kid, about 8 or so, comes into the library tonight and asks me if he has to have his library card to "get into" the library.  I tell him no--he can come in whenever he would like.

A little paranoid . . . but adorable, nonetheless.

 Next some media highlights . . .

From the television:
Do you know how awesome General David Petraeus is?  No?  Well, Barbara Walters (and myself) sure think he is fascinating.  In fact, Walters named him her most fascinating person of 2010.  Want to know why??  Because this guy was not only appointed the top commander in Afghanistan by President Obama, but he stresses the importance of building schools over bombing, teaching farmers how to better utilize their resources, and NOT killing innocent civilians who are in the line of fire just to to kill more Taliban.
"But Petraeus is a different kind of general, fighting a different kind of war. The counter insurgency strategy largely authored and being implemented now by Petraeus is based on the idea that wars cannot be won with bullets alone, but instead through the hearts and the minds of the local population. Human terrain is the decisive terrain."   --From the ABC Interview
Petraeus was once laughed at for his views on combat.

Who's laughing now?

And finally, from a periodical:

I think Chelsea Handler is one of the best and bravest comedians because of her brutal honesty.  I mean, what is the foundation of humor?  Truth, right?  Things are just funnier when they are "so" true.  This is why I love her books, her stand-up, and her television show.  Anyway, last night I was reading an interview she did in Glamour magazine when I came across the following quote that pretty much sums up how I feel, especially when I WRITE THIS BLOG:
"Because I discuss drinking openly, people think, oh, she must drink every night and get drunk.  I enjoy my cocktail, but I enjoy it responsibly.  As for sex, in my book, My Horizontal Life, I actually go to bed with a total of eight guys.  But talking about it leads people to believe that I was a trollop.  I don't want to be one of those girls who is like, 'Oh, I didn't do that.  I'm not like that.'  Because those girls make girls like me feel bad about ourselves.  And we should be bringing each other up, not putting each other down."
Preach on, Miss Handler.  Preach on.

Sincerely,
Nik
